We like to think we are a little different to most.    We don’t drop ship.  We don’t backorder products.   If you can add an item to cart – we have it in stock, in Australia to ship straight away!

Introducing the DJI Mini 5 Pro

Welcome to Drone Accessories Australia – we are a small Australian based business specialising in providing accessories for DJI’s range of drones. Whilst we don’t sell drones, we are always keen to see the latest and greatest released by DJI – and from first looks the DJI Mini 5 Pro doesn’t disappoint!

With a huge update from the DJI Mini 4 Pro – and maintaining a similar price point, DJI have really pushed the boundaries of what they can include in this small drone.

If you already have your DJI Mini 5 and are after accessories for it – check out our dedicated page for Accessories for the DJI Mini 5 Pro!

So lets have a look –

We managed to source one of the DJI Mini 5 Pro’s on launch day (no freebies around here!) and it seems like the are readily available across quite a few retailers in Australia for launch day. We grabbed the Fly More Combo Plus version – so we have the heavier, longer lasting batteries – apparently up to about 50 minutes on these ones.

Checking out the fly more combo – it comes with filters, they are the ND filter set and whilst we will go and get some polarised filters once they are released from FreeWell – these will get us started. We have never really used the DJI branded filters.

The drone – iti s a bit of a darker grey than the previous Mini drones – I like it! Not that that is really relevant to what it does and how it flies…

The case… I always dislike the case they include with the fly more combo’s – and not just because we sell cases. Having the drone go in vertically makes it all prone to damage and the case just isn’t that strong. We have put the drone straight into our ABS Hard cases (which we had stock of ready for launch – amazing!) to keep all the gear safe from damage and easier to handle.

Everything else seems pretty much as normal – the DJI RC2 is the same remote we have seen on DJI’s more recent releases and it is also compatible with the DJI RC-N3 if your after a cheaper option or like to use your own phone or tablet as a display instead. Personally, I’ll generally use the RC2 remote – but it is also compatible with the DJI RC Pro 2 that we have as well – for those brighter days (these are pricey, not something that most recreational operators would go out and get in my view).

PREPPING FOR THE FIRST FLIGHT

Just a general comment – we went with the PLUS version with the larger capacity battery. A lot of people are worried about being over 250grams with the larger battery but this is only a concern if you plan on flying near controlled airports! Everywhere else the rules are the same – and even near controlled airports if you are under 250grams you can still only go up to about 45 metres and need to be well out of the way of flight paths etc. Check out the CASA website for more detail but the 250gram rules really impact so few people in my view.

Another comment – DJI Care Refresh . We put it on EVERY drone we own – and whilst we have never had to use it, it provides us the cover and protection should we need it. We do a lot of flying over water, taking off from boats, flying in the bush around trees and windy areas – and would likely be pretty upset if we crashed it without the coverage. We always go the genuine DJI Care refresh rather than one of the retail offers – we find the support from DJI when we have had warranty issues has been fantastic and have heard from people who have used their DJI Care Refresh for replacements and can’t fault them.

Now, that we have got the drone all unpacked and covered with DJI Care Refresh – we will work on a flight! :). I don’t tend to fly the drones indoors – with the exception of the DJI Neo (which I still love for a fun little drone). Its just my thing – some people do obviously.

Before we fly the drones first time, we charge the batteries fully – yes the have some charge in them generally from factory but I prefer to fully charge them and know where I am starting from. Same with the remote control. Looks like the charger will charge the lowest battery first and then move onto the next lowest etc.

Note – there is no wall or car charger included in the package! Make sure you are using a charger that is at least 30W (we hear from lots of people that their batteries are taking a long time to charge – this is normally the problem!). If your using the charging hub – DJI recommends 65W for optimal charging. You can use higher capacity chargers as well – it won’t make it charge any quicker, but means the charger is a bit more future proof.

Also before flight – checking for any software and firmware updates. These drones and remotes were probably actually built and packed a while ago and the software will have had updates since then. Calibrating the drone before that first flight will also help ensure stability and safety as well. I hate to say it – watch a video, read the manual – if your not sure what to do!

FIRST FLIGHT

So this one might be stating the obvious – but i will put it in here anyway. Before you fly – check out an app like OK2Fly – make sure where you are flying is allowed! Not sure of the rules for drone flying? Check out CASA’s KNOW YOUR DRONE website for the basics.

…. more detail on the first flight coming soon….
